Bhaktapur also Bhadgaon or Khwopa is an ancient Newar town in the east corner of the Kathmandu Valley, Nepal. It is located in Bhaktapur District in the Bagmati Zone. It is the third largest city in Kathmandu valley and was once the capital of Nepal during the great Malla Kingdom until the second half of the 15th century.

Bhaktapur is listed as a World Heritage by UNESCO for its rich culture, temples, and wood, metal and stone artwork.
Die Nyatapola-Pagode am Taumadhi-Platz

Der Nyatapola-Tempel (nyata ‚fünfstöckig‘; pola ‚Stufen‘), der höchste Tempel des Kathmandutals, befindet sich auf dem Taumadi-Platz und ist der Gottheit Lakshmi geweiht. Der 30 Meter hohe fünfstöckige Tempel wurde 1708 fertiggestellt und überstand aufgrund seiner Bauweise das große Erdbeben von 1934.

Die Pagode steht auf einem abgestuften Sockel mit fünf Terrassen. Die Treppe, die diesen Sockel hinaufführt, wird auf jeder Etage von einem anderen Figurenpaar flankiert. Im Tempelinneren befindet sich eine Statue der Gottheit Siddhilakshmi Bhavani, der größten und mächtigsten tantrischen Gottheit. Deshalb wird der Nyatapola-Tempel auch als Tempel der Schrecklichen bezeichnet. Seit 1979 steht er auf der Welterbeliste der UNESCO.
