In the Tunnel

Directly in front is the ladder we climbed down to get into the tunnel.
We immediately noticed that the tunnel leading to the Chapel was sealed
off with these concrete blocks. I wonder why?
I wonder how many people sat in that chair?
Everything here has a story to tell.
We only ventured about 20 feet into the tunnels on this trip
because they were pitch dark and our flashlights weren't powerful
enough to raise my comfort level beyond,,,well,,terror.
I looked at the guy I was with and said "we need bigger lights", he said
"we need more people". lol
There were police officers outside who actually gave us permission to go.
We were told the greatest danger was getting lost because the tunnels take many
curves and turns. They weren't willing to come and rescue us. lol
As soon as we get "bigger lights" and "more people", I'll produce shots of these
mysterious, intriguing tunnels.

The part that I find intriguing is that the police waiting outside said they were unwilling to come in and rescue you if the need arose. I can only assume they were kidding but I wonder why? Do they know something or have their own fears to deal with?

I live in NH and have worked at NHH. But my grandmother was addmitted to NNH in 1958! When I started working there I felt like everyone knew me, they knew her. There are alot of tunnels on the grounds of New Hampshire Hospital. My father was told that the community of Concord NH did not feel it was safe also it looked bad enough having the patients walk in the community, thus the tunnels were used to keep out of site to this loving community. They were used for many things mostly to seem as if they didn't live there. Only the Dr's and RN's walked the grounds. who would ever want to see a crazie! I love the history of hospitals NHH has a great one, and there my grandmother died, but not alone the staff is amazing!

I work at an old TB hosiptal, which is now being used for Intellectual devepolmental disabled adults. We have tunnels that are not in use anymore, they were once used to transport, food, the dead, equipment, and a safe place during storms. These tunnels once connected to each building.

They built tunnels that went under the ground so the loonies wouldn't have to walk through the cold to get from building to building. (and yes I can call them loonies because I myself am and have been hospitalized 5 times.)

Perhaps the tunnel had become unstable. I would be happy to know there were police waiting just outside...

This photo was used in an online point and click flash-game. I can't remember the name, but I've played it. I will try to figure out what it is and post it! Your photos are really amazing.

I'm guessing either to keep annoying partiers out or the area in question was damaged and nobody wanted the liability if somebody got injured. That or some really disturbing ghost story was at work (sic)

I'm guessing the tunnel was blocked off to keep vagrents or vandles out
