This seems to be the natural evolution of the Malagasy landscape - first the trees are cleared and burned for charcoal. Where possible rice paddies are created. And when the rice paddies stop producing rice, the topsoil is turned into bricks. Then they start hacking into the rock to use the gravel for making roads.
