The Sausage Deli

Tucson, AZ

The Sausage Deli has been around since the 1970’s. It is only a few miles down the road from where I live, but I have only eaten there once, and it was not for the Rueben. Their $8.95 “Ruben Goldberger” comes with a few pickle slices and no other sides. But a Miller Lite was just $2, so I got one to wash it down. I met up with my longtime friend Pete, who mistakenly ordered their “Artichoke Ruben”, which replaces the Sauerkraut with Artichokes- we both agreed they should drop “Ruben” from the sandwich name.

The Reuben was served on marble rye with a few dill pickle slices. The bread had not been toasted or grilled- my guess is that they heated it up in a microwave, as the bread was a bit on the soggy side and the Swiss cheese was melted in some places more than others. Speaking of Swiss cheese, they could have used a bit more on it. The Sausage Deli's idea of Reuben Sauce, typically some version of thousand island dressing, was mustard. While I have no aversion to putting mustard on a Rueben after I have eaten enough to review it, that should not be used as the Reuben sauce. To be honest, I did not notice the sauerkraut. On the plus side, the corned beef was plentiful for the size of the sandwich and was very tender. You could see the potential, but it kinda fell flat on execution. I am going to give it a “C-”.

Sorry to see a modest "C" due to the sandwich's unrealized promise....
but yet commendable for the generous serving of corned beef which managed
to fill the sandwich admirably, boasting tender succulence....V
