During WWII, gasoline was rationed. It was a scarce commodity on the home front. Seventy-eight years ago, there were attendants at the pump. My father, who drew this, was once an attendant. He told the story of pumping gas at a filling station in Jacksonville, IL while attending college in 1929. After work, he would stop on the way home and buy a hamburger for a nickel. That ate up a chunk of his daily wage of 25 cents!
