Sub-family: Melanoplinae
Genus: Melanoplus
Species: cf ligneolus

Members of this sub-family generally have short/very
short wings. I will try to find this species again to
learn more about how functional these wings actually are.

The experts at BugGuide have confirmed your suspicion. This is indeed an adult male in the sub-family Melanoplinae, Spur-throated Grasshoppers, genus Melanoplus, probably M. ligneolus.
