My retired parents Ann and Tony, owned the Tamaqua House rooming house in the early 70s. My dad worked in the park as Manager of Kiddyland for many years. When my kids went to stay at their home, they didn't want us to come back for them. Cincinnati just couldn't compare to the fries at the end of the boardwalk. My old dad & the other retired workers would ride the Blue Streeeeek just to make sure it was okay for the park to open. He always rode in the last seat. He was over 70. You just have to love that coaster!

I remember my days at Conneaut Lake. I love this park. In the 60's and 70's. My great grandfather helped build the Blue Streak. I was sad to hear about the fires that took Dreamland and the Arcade. I hope it can come back one day. It was filled with joy and great memories. We will all keep Conneaut Lake alive in our hearts.

Hi Lou, I was a member of the the rock band "An Incorporated Few" that was referred to by Dom in an earlier post. 1965 to 1972 at Conneaut were my "Glory Days". We were the kings of the music scene. We recorded a demo named "You Just Told Me" that hit # 1 in NW Pa., eventhough it was never released, thanks to Barney at WGRP. I never took pictures because I thought it would never end. Bob

Thanks for sharing those pics. Me and my wife took the kids to conneaut lake parks ghost park ,this oct to ride the blue streak and haunted houses .where else can you ride the blue streak in oct in 38 degree temp at 1:00 am .Our boys wanted to see what the park looked like when we were young .Your web site had some great pics .Wanted to show them where the ballroom and gamerooms used to be .It was a bummer that the park has had some bad times with fires/thieves and broken promises.

Does anyone have any home movies of Fairyland Forest? I would love to see some on You Tube! Our family went to Conneaut lake Park every year from 1969 to 1979. I returned in 2006 to find Fairyland Forest replaced with Camperland. I was 44 then, but I would have taken the walk through Fairyland Forest just for the memories. I plan to go to Conneaut again this year just to ride the Blue Streak. This was my first grown-up roller coaster. But I would love to see some old film or video of Fairyland Forest.

I was the youngest of 4 children, the only one born in Oak Ridge Tennessee... after my family moved there from Meadville. However, the only vacations I remember were spent in PA visiting my paternal grandmother. Conneaut Lake Park was a frequent destination for fun. I don't recall the riding stable... my father probably knew what would happen if I saw it. I do remember one horse feature though; a pony ride where one can ride around a large horseshoe shaped "track" untethered. There was a fast pony track, and a slow pony track. Dad bought me a stack of tickets, and, after watching a bit, left me to my own devices. There has never been a better babysitter for me, and the "fast" ponies transported me to my private heaven. My siblings went wild on the Wild Mouse, and rode the Blue Streak til they puked. I also remember a slide in the middle of the swimming area of the lake, maybe a floating raft like a deck... yes, I grew up savoring the fun at Conneaut Lake Park. Adrienne

I'm 81 and we always spent the summer at Conneaut Lake. Our family cottage was up on Midway Hill and we had great neighbors, one my Uncle Stan Gillespie's family two doors down. Does anyone else remember the riding stable on the East Side ? I loved that place and running the pony paths in the pasture behind it - now it's all cottages. During WW2, there wasn't much traffic on the roads and the West Side Stables (across from the park - there was an old racetrack there, too ) used to hold ALL DAY RIDES for $10. Well, for a kid who lived to be on horseback, that was one of the finest days of my life ! We stopped in town by the bakery to get a bite for lunch, and tied the horses down the hill by the water - try and do that today ! I rode a bay horse named "Sterling" ( after his fine qualities, evidently - not his name ) - those stable horses really learned their keep ! Friends and I still remember ponies - half-blind Maggie, Jiggs, Sandy, and the horses, including Bird and Colonel. It was fun to ride up to the golf course and ride the path behind the cottages which went under the big pines - heavenly days ! After my Mother died, my Dad sold the cottage they'd had for 20 years, and we were renting one from Elmer Freeland on the West Side ( Aldina Drive ) when they announced VJ DAY on the radio. No one was around so I missed all the celebrating - and had no idea that it was all going on ! Was glad it was over, tho, so my two brothers could come home safe from the Pacific. Our next door neighbors were wonderful Harry and Clara Kleinhans - both such gems. Harry owned part of the park and used to give us free tickets, but we only allowed our kids to ride one ride each visit because we didn't want to stand around and wait for them to get off. So we had lots of tickets left years later when Harry died and never used them, altho I realize now that they would have honored them. I should dig them out and give them to their great little Museum - it has great old exhibits, including the boat with the jet engine which they rescued from the deep and have there in the building in town which used to be the firehouse. New people have poured a lot of money into the park, and it sounds like all will be well this summer, but they can always use volunteer help ( plus funds ) if anyone wants to help out ! One group there last sumer was a big national Polish group. We're not Polish but had great fun and plenty of Polish food, which is always good !

Hi all. I stayed at the Hotel when I was pregnant with my first child. I thought I was in heaven. Had a really cool old room on the third floor and with the lake breeze, it was totally comfortable. (I hate air conditioning) The building itself reminded me of Cowles Hall at Elmira College. Same feel. Anyway, my question is: Does ANYONE have any pictures of that old Orchard Beach boat thing that they used to use as a dance hall - or mariner or something?

Hi Lou, My father worked at Wean Mfg. and all but one year, his company held the picnic at Conneaut Lake Park. The very first roller coaster I rode was with my uncle and my cousin and it was the Blue Streak. I was scared to death but after I rode it, I didn't want to stay off. I got brave one time and put my hands up in the air and my cousin grabbed my arms to pull them down and knocked my glasses off. Some of the workers went under the coaster and looked until they found my glasses. I loved the train ride too. That was always the first ride we rode every year so that we could strategize our ride list. We thought we were big shots when we were allowed to roam the park without our parents. I have many many fond memories of Conneaut Lake Park so I wish you the very bewst in your endeavor.

I remember being taken to Fairyland Forest every year we were in nursery school. I would freak out when we went near the haunted house display and couldn't be taken in without losing it. Now, I love horror movies. Go figure! I would love to find pictures of Fairyland Forest from the seventies.

I grew up in Franklin and loved going to the park as a kid and into my teens. I live in NC and want to visit home in 2010. I REALLY hope the park will be open and the Blue Streak will be open. Does any one know if there are any rides like the old hell hole in existence now a-days?

What great posts!! Thanks. The vinger fries in the cones---the slanted room --- the slide --- and, the screen door maze in the Fun House. Walking out onto the "Grass Dock" at the beach (where the big girls and guys hung out) and thinking someday I wont be a little boy and can hang with these guys! Wow!! All great memories. We lived behind the Hotel and I would sometimes have the courage to walk on the Hotel's sidewalk (under the overhang and around the dining room) on the way back from the beach at 4-5 PM. They would be setting up for dinner. I would look into the dining room with the linen table clothes and wonder if I would ever be able to afford to eat in a place like that. Anyone remeber the free acts --- the wrestling in Dreamland Ballroom---or the Little Miss Sunshine (bread) annual picnics. Then on a rare night out for dinner we would go to the Thresherman's Dinner over toward Pymatuming and stop to see the "ducks walk on the fish". Buy the stale bread for 10 cents a loaf and feed the fish. I have said before that we lived in "Oz"---it was a magical place in the 50's.

CLP is open on weekends in 2009. Hotel Conneaut and Beach Club are under a management ocntract with two young couples who are working hard to bring both facilites back to a semblence of their former glory. Stayed there in late June and it shows promise. Will do what I can to support their efforts. Comments on this blog resonate with me. I grew up in Meadville in the 40's and 50's and our family enjoyed the Park a lot, always included a picnic and lots of rides, usually on the Wednesday "specials" where we kids saved our nickles and dimes to be able to purchase our own rides. I remember many a time when we went to the picnic grounds to find that all the pavillions were reserved. I was mildly annoyed with all these people taking our picnic spaces but my parents were never bothered--we just found a place away from the pavillions to have our picnics. So many thoughts about the wonderful times there: dreaming of the time when I would get to the 42" mark so I could ride in some of the "big" rides; the thrill of the first (or last) car on the Blue Streak; snapp9ing cables on the Flying Scooter; reaching for the brass ring on the Carousel; the vinegar french fries served in a cone; the madness of the midway; the log cabin; dreaming of what it must be like to luxurate in Hotel Conneaut (my large family would take lots of trips but mostly stayed in tents--we could never afford a fancy hotel like that), miniature golf games adjacent to the commons area, the fun house with the croocked room and wooden slide and so much more. I sincerely hope they are able to keep up CLP but it is an upward battle. Look at what has happened to other family amusement parks in the area. One thought I have had for several years is to start a NW PA version of a Chatacqua--local colleges and religious groups might take a week each during the season to have seminars, continuing education, art festivals and such with Hotel Conneaut as the main stay. As an inducement, perhaps the rides could operate exclusively on Thursdays for the Chatacqua participants and the rides on the weekends would be available to the Chatacqua participants at a discount wile the general public would pay full fare. Just a thought.

All these posts are WONDERFUL! Truly CLP lived up to its name as "Pennsylvania's Perfect Playground". I am a third generation park enthusiast who had many of the same feelings related earlier, having grown up at the Park in the 40s and enjoying the vinegar french fries in a cone, being fascinated by the midway, and terrified by the "Fun House" (an oxymoron ifever there was one). Who remembers the "tilted room" or the indoor wooden slide? As a kid of 6 or 7 I could only dream of riding the Blue Streak or wondering how the rich and famous were spending their day in Hotel Conneaut--an exclusive place far beyond the means of our large family. When I grew up and spent nearly 30 years in the service, each year I would come to the Meadville area to visit family and to relive the childrhood fantasies of the park. My grown sons, now 38 and 40 spent many happy childhood days riding the Merry Go Round and, like me, dreaming of a time when they could ride the Blue Streak. In 1998 I helped introduce a 5th generation of our family's park enjoyment when my grandson, then less than a year old, rode some of the kiddie rides. Fast forward to July 2009 and the park is open on a limited schedule and some rides are operational, though it is uncertain if the Blue Streak will ever be certified. Sadly, the train seems to have disappeared and, in its place, they installed a miniature golf course. Two young families are working hard to keep Hotel Conneaut and the Beach Club operational and it looks like they are achieving some level of success. I intend to support them any way I can. Speaking of Hotel Conneaut, I finally achieved my childhood dream of staying in the "luxury hotel" several years ago and I was impressed by the room dedications and the love of history and park patrons that were embodied in a number of rooms. When the hotel closed (again) I feared that all that history might be lost. I was delighted to see that the current operators are doing their best to preserve the legacy that those room dedications represent. My family and I will be visiting agin in late July and will do our best to support the Hotel and the Park. Meanwhile, I wonder if anybody has ever thought of turning the property into a Chatacqua? Given the number of colleges and religious groups in the area, maybe that would represent a solution for the park. Assuming a 12 week summer season, surely there must be 12 colleges or religious groups who might want to have a week retreat, using the facilities of the Hotel and the Beach. with the promise that on the weekend, their patrons could ride "free" while the general public enjoys the rides. Just a thought.

Thank you, Bob Durst, for your post about my Dad. He was a kind person, a fine teacher and administrator.We all are sad to see CLP in its current state. It was a magical place for root beer, fries, rides, roller skating. When I was very young I was allowed to go into the fun house by myself and I was terrified. I was crying on the balcony and my brother had to come in and rescue me. This was about 1935.

Al Krall--I remember your father, Harvey. The summers I worked a the Park, he was always good to me and all the workers. If we had guests in town, he would always allow us to ride anytime it wasn't packed. I don't remember the 3 trains, wounds like a lot, but wouldn't doubt it. I had an aunt and 2 cousins in from California and Harvey allowed me to show them the town on the Blue Streak. They still talk about their night on the Blue Streak.

So many have mentioned the "Blue Streak" coaster, and if you read my post of 08/30/06, you will learn of the memories it holds for me. I must tell you that my father, Harvey A. Krall, who had retired as Supervising Principal of the Mercer Schools after 20+ years and my mother winterized their cottage on the East Side, Midway Avenue, opposite from the little grocery store and lived there from 1950 to about 1969. My Dad was never one to stop working and for at least ten years he was one of the Blue Streak operators. Every day he walked the full length of the track inspecting for loose fastenings or any unsafe condition. And here is the real tribute:When things were really busy three trains could be run but three could not come in unless there was one out. My Dad was one of the very few with the smarts to try this. It would please me to hear from anyone who might have been his .passenger

My name is Kelly Ridenour. The company my mother worked for always has their company picnic at Conneaut Lake Park. I remember as a child how exciting it was to even KNOW I was going...let alone BEING there. I remember it when the "waterpark" was the lake and the "waterslide" was this huge slide we had to climb 59 steps to get to the top...then down into the lake we went. And I remember riding the BLUE STREAK 19 times in a row with my cousin Eddie. I remember hoping mom would let us stay in the Hotel for just one night...but we never had the money...so all I could do was dream. I am heartbroken that the park has fallen. I would love to help revive it. Who do I get ahold of to do that?

Hi my name is Sue and my parents owned some property in Pymatuming PA. Every summer we went there. I have a picture of my Mother and myself infront of the Lollypop garden at FairyLand Forest, in 1961, which was located across the road from clp and another picture of me in the shoe. In the 70's I spent alot of time at clp, actually, every weekend. When I got older and had children, I took them there. The blue streak was the BEST roller coaster ANYWHERE. I am sooo sorry to here of the parks demise.

my name is russ and i got a season pass 4 years in a row and my 2 freinds jay and joe we all have a place in linnesville pa we had graet memorys there we used to thow our gum on the gum wall on the devals den so we allways used to stop at the sheets in down town conneaut. We also liked the the water slides cuz we used to stop in the middle of them and climb back up and get in trouble but the we would get back on.

Back when I was 8-13 my family would rent a cabins up at Conneaut Lake we would swin in the lake and eat at Mama's Bears and I just loved the little shops.The park was the highlight of our trip.I just loved the Blue Streak and when they added the lazy river and water park. I'm now 28 and was planning on visiting again I'm so sad that they shut down the park.It still holds memories of my childhood.Thanks for the lovely gallery :)

Every summer we would vacation at our smaller trailer near Conneaut Lake Park, our kids grew up enjoying this wonderful park. Our families then started to come to the park and Labor Day weekend up at Conneaut Lake Park was the highlight of the summer. The rides, fireworks and atmosphere were wonderful. I like we are losing part of our family by not having this small park. Hopefully by some miracle Conneaut will be revamped some how so that my grandchildren can enjoy this park as my children and family had in the past. Paula (Pittsburgh)

I am heart broken to read about the fire and the bowling alley. I read Cary Voltz's grand daughter's post---my grand parents lived next door and Mrs. Jackson who owned the Log Cabin lived next to both. One door down was Dud and Ann Fisher, the police chief-- The 50's a CLP were more than wonderful----the sight and sounds, the beach and learning to swim there (taught by Bob Stahl, the "lifeguard", driving in at night with the lights and activity, the granduer of the Hotel-- and smell of its freshly baked pies on the window sills---the free acts, the company picnics we all crahed, the ferry boats, Miss Conneaut and on and on we go. Who remembers the drug store across from Dreamland, the Post Office with its little brass po boxes, the grocery store down by the fun house, the pontoons in the swimmng area. Dreamland---professional wrestling in the 50's, the Funeral Director's Convention, the dances (!!), sitting on the window sills of the open windows and hoping some one could drive us to the Cow Shed and that we could get in--- How about the names of the cottages--Pretty by Night, Lakeside, Tamaqua (my grand parents) -- picnics on Wolf Island -- hard to row the boat out there with a couple cases of "soft drinks" on Board!! We lived in "Oz" -- and, how blessed we were to have done so!!

My gr. grandfather's half-brother, William Edgar Snow (who died in 1923), actaully lived at the park and a think ran the hotel when it first opened. I would very much like to see any old photos of the park, especially of William Edgar at the park!

I am back again.Since the last time I visited this site,I just read about the fire. My memories of this lake park are saddened. It almost makes me cry to think about it. I cant believe no one has come forward to take over this prodject to replace this great family oriented park. My Idea is to remodel conneaut lake park,but to redo it exactly like is was with everything there and more .I dont want to see it has a sea world or an up to date fiesta type park.I want to see it like is was from the 40`s thru the 70`s.I love this park so much that I still,at age 65 have dreams about it.It has become part of me. BUT WAIT!!!!! theres more!!!!! My little girl of 13 as been blessed with a voice that is recording in Nashville as I write this right now.I have told her stories of this park,and she promises me that when she gets famous she will replace the park the way it was so that she and I can visit it together. What great memories I have of Conneaut Lake Park dating back to the 50s. My parents even purchased a cottage there. I loved the place. It was great driving through the park or just walking down the midway. I especially remember the french frys and donuts. I was part of a rock group called "An Incorporated Few" which played the Beach Club, Cow Shed, Hunting and Fishing Club, and a small bar called the Nightowl. I wish it would come back but that does not look likely.

OMG This park needs to find a miracle so that is can remain open. I worked there in the late 80's, I remember when you could drive thru the park while it was open. I have so many memories of that place, I made so many friends and even had a few boyfriends while working 3 summers there. I hope they can find a way to re-open it!!

people i live all year long right at the park. dont give up on her now. i get to hear the talk we are on our way back to my understanding. it will be a long and hard road but things are happening! i take 3 walks every day rain,snow or shine through conneaut lake park just becase i like to walk. i see and i hear. trust me she aint dying yet!

My family went every year to Conneaut lake park every summer for the Armco company picnic. Then when we bought an RV, I took my friends with me and we camped at the parks campground. I have long since married and moved to New Mexico. I didn't realize that they wanted to close the park. It is sad that they can't keep the park up any more. I sure had wonderful times at the park and good memories that will always be with me. This is a very old park that seems to have been around forever. It would be a shame not to have it any more for other generations to enjoy the park like we all did.

Conneaut Lake Park is in the hearts of everyone who ever went to a company picnic sponsored by the JOY or CPT in Franklin. My family and I went every year, and as a young adult I went on my own with a date or friends. Many memories--the best part is memories last forever.

i am crying as i type this comment...i visited the park 2 years ago almost, and never thought that a fire would maybe be the final demise of conneaut lake park....i know that there are alot of people who are just as torn up as i ....to all of you, i am so sorry.....i hope that when the last day comes for the park ....they will at least be able to save the hotel and make a museum honoring all the wonderful memories, facts and history of clp......people would still come to get a glance of and era past......long live conneaut lake park...i will always love you.......

This is not fair whatsoever all of this was so fun and now it is gone. Although it is not gone forever. If we all pitch in we can save it! Let me tell you a story. When me and my sister went up to Pennsylavania to visit our garndma Dot we got really exciteed. Then we relized the amusment park near the house. It was so close that we could walk there. That year we went and I had a blast. Then the ext year went again and again and again. Then one year we went and the next day we were to go home. All those years that I had went I was too scared to ride the adult Blue Streak. I had always ridden the Kiddie one. That day I got on to the adult one. I had never had so much thrill in my life. Then when I did ride my grandma Dot couldn't go she was very ill. The next morning we left. We then later got a call once we had gotten home and it said that grandma Dot had died. The next year we went up to collect our share of the will. She had left us the entire house and pretty much with everything in it. We had also brought a friend with us. We went home and then the next year we brought our different friend. My bestest friend and her familly. She did not get to ride blue streak that day because we had to go home. Then last year we were so excited because she knew she was going to ride it. Then when we got there we relized that it was closed so that entire time we had to fix our porch! Hopefully you people will have a big enough heart to donate so my friend can fullfill her dream

OMG they can't get rid of the park thats where I grew up. I live like not even 3/4 of a mile from it. It is my Garndma Dots house. Whe n I was little and before she died me her my dad and my mom would go there. The past few years we would bring our friends with us. My best friend and her brother had gone there once and fell in love woth it. Last year when it didn't open we got really mad. I have been going there since I was 2 in 1996. It is my vaction house up there we share so many memories.I n that park so many that we will not forget. I will deffinatly be funding this and I bet my friend will to. It os a terrible loss. Although it does't have to be gone forever we can help. Do your part to bring back the onced cherished memories!

I was born and raised in Sharon, PA and spent alot of time at CLP, my sister actually worked there and Dad would drive my brother and I from Sharon and just drop us off for the day ( as long as my sister was working ). I now live in South Eastern Pa and must say that when i read the Sharon Heralds website today and found out about the Fire, I was shocked and very sad and yes even crying. I had hoped to bring my youngest son there soon, so he could experience what I did at his age. PLEASE people lets find a way to save this park, I will do what ever I can from this part of the state, just say what and when.........

I am so very sorry to report the possible final death stroke to our beloved CLP. Last night, a fire in the Dreamland Ballroom destroyed the entire second floor and did considerable damage to the ground-floor concession and game stands. I am in tears and literally sick to my stomach as it surely could not have been anything but arson. I don't think the park will recover from this horrific blow. It's a terrible sight to see, and most likely one from which CLP won't be able to recover, as they could not afford fire insurance. I'm afraid this may be the last gasp of a great amusement park which afforded pleasure to 3 generations of my family from Sharon, PA.

Donate to Conneaut Lake Park! Write letters that Conneaut should not shut down! Get together with a group (a large one), and go to Conneaut to fix up the old rides and bring them back to their formal glory! They can't take down OUR amusement park! People, save Conneaut! I was raised in farrell pa.Ispent every summer at conneaut,lake, from 1958 thru 1962.I played the drums with the great band called THE ANGELS, 7days a week., at the famous COW SHED. The best memory`s of my life were from that time. I can still remember the park side like it was yesterday.We met thousands of people from all over the US.I surely miss those days I`ll never forget the guy``s in the band,Frank,Doug,Bobby,JNcluding other guy`s from meadville that use to sit in with us,Buddy Pendolino,Joe buffalino,great musians.I`ll never forget Jean from Linesville, or ringing the stongmans bell at parkside with Hack Sobel,one of my best friends or going to the teen dances upstairs at the pavillion.,or skieing and swimming,party`s every night.These were the greatest times of my entire life.I am saddened to think of this park closing.I moved to tx.in the early 60`s and even opened a club called the Cowshed.I coud tell you stories ,for ever about this famous place. Memories are forever!!! I was fortunate to be able to have both Idora and CLP as my childhood parks, and I am so glad that I went to CLP many times every season. What a great place. The traditional midways and lakeside setting are priceless. In the early days, I went to the park with my neighborhood buddy whose family owned the first cottage off the boardwalk. I learned how to water ski on Conneaut Lake, and remember driving thru the park and marveling at all the rides. Some of my favorites that are long gone are the Ultimate Trip, Dracula's Cave, Hell Hole, and the double Sky Wheel. Once I rode a 6-minute Ultimate Trip ride, with Boston's "Don't Look Back" blasting in its entirety. The Blue Streak ran better than ever in the last few seasons, especially because of the return of its original vintage train. Fixed lap bars and open seating- the way a real classic was meant to run. I was lucky last year to ride the restored Bug with my 5-year old son, Nikolas, who loves rides just like his daddy. Of course, I sincerely hope the park can hang on and get thru its difficulties for future generations. The tranquility of the CLP atmosphere can't be beat. The Dreamland Ballroom, the ancient hotel veranda, the Beach Club, and the gum wall on the Devil's Den- how can we afford to lose such a place? CLP forever (ride-a-rama!!)

I loved reading all of the comments. I lived in the Park - the Keystone Cottage - directly across from the back of the Hotel Conneaut. My mother Caddy Voltz ran the Log Cabin Sandwich shop for many, many years. My memories are many - there is a spot in my heart for CLP. I am saddened by the fence around the Park but after many, many years I still remember how to get to my old home by using back roads. I love the pumpkinfest and can't wait to take my grandchildren back. Thanks for the great memories.

There is nothing so sad as an amusement park waiting for revelers who never come. I returned home to Sharon PA during the last week of June to visit my family and begged my husband to drive to CLP, as I'd heard it may possibly be open that weekend . After 24 years, I still remembered the way and experienced that wonderful thrill one feels when spying the Blue Streak as we rolled around the bend in the road. Due to a boat show that day, the park was not actually open but was allowing strolling pedestrians to wander about, so we were fortunate to be able to walk around the park and enjoy the ambience of this beautiful place. It broke my heart to see many of the rides all ready to go but hearing nothing but the birds twittering in the trees and the rustling of those majestic branches overhead instead of laughter of children and screams of exhiliaration from the Blue Streak. The smells of Conneaut Lake were still there, however... old wood, oil and grease, creosote, and the marvelous lake breeze. And, the magic was still there. As we were walking down the midway, my husband began recounting bits and pieces of memory which were washing back into his recall...apparently he had been to Conneaut at some time in his childhood and those long-lost memories all started coming back! Now THAT'S magic! We purchased several CLP coins and a lanyard for me to wear my company badge at work, but most importantly- -we signed up as volunteers to come in next April 2008 and help get the park back on its feet. We'll also give a substantially larger donation to the park at that time. If we are willing to drive 3 1/2 hours from suburban Columbus OH to donate part of our vacation to helping CLP, we ask: what can YOU do? Don't let the Grand Dame of Western PA die!! She needs your help in as little or as much as you can afford, whether it's a $5.00 coin purchase or sweat equity in painting a kiosk or park bench! Please don't turn your back on this wonderful place! My husband and I will do our best to help the effort; I hope it encourages others to do something as well. Once CLP is gone, she'll never come back. Let's not let that happen.

Wow! I'm in Texas & never heard of this charming park until I started researching 2 lovely lacey edged plates that are marked marked “Souvenir of the Conneaut Lake Exposition Park” . One is marked 1897; the other is from 1899. There is an image of what I believe is crossed oars above the text. If you would like photos to include in your archives, I will gladly email them. I started going to the Park in 1945 (two years old) and ahve been going ever since. We have the good fortune to have a cottage at Pymatuning and can drive over in the evenings for french fries and fun. My grandparents (long departed) spent their honeymoon in the Hotel Conneaut, so the Park is an integral part of our family history. Even though the park teeters on the edge of shutdown every year (2006 losses of $200,000+) our family will do everything possible to keep this treasure open from park cleanup and "putting the Lady to bed" for the winter, to attending Pumpkinfest and Holiday in the Park. The only way to keep her open is to go and spend money (even when the PA weather is less than optimal) and have a good time in the process. See you at the Park in 2007!!

I have been going to Conneaut Lake Park since I was 7. That was 40 some years ago. I recently visited the park with my sister and it was so nice. We ate at the Hotel Conneaut and the meal was wonderful. We took the boat ride around the park and it was so relaxing. I remember going to the old Grinnell picnics where they held them by the Blue Streak. What a fun time that was. I hope Conneaut Lake stays open as it is the only park that you don't have to pay for rides if you don't ride. Not all people ride rides but they do enjoy walking and eating and just relaxing.

The large "boat" built into the building was the Oakland Beach Hotel's Marine Bar and Grille. This was on the east side of the lake where there was also the Midway Hotel. My parents owned cottages on the east side: on Shady Avenue, Midway Avenue and Center Avenue from 1938 to 1970. I used to go to the park as a teenager at night in our boat from Shady Avenue. Often taking the ferries also. Best boat was "Miss Conneaut", a twin engine Hacker that took riders from the park on a few minute spin around the lake at about 40 MPH. On our senior class picnic at the park in June 1945, the beautiful girl who became my wife and I rode the Blue Streak 13 consecutive times. I grew up in Mercer.

I was recently going through a scrapbook and found a picture of what appears to be a hotel with a large boat built right into the building. It was hanging out over the water. I am so glad to see this web page....i visited conneaut lake park in july ...I was very worried about the park, it seemed run down. i have been going to the park for 35 years and i want to help save conneaut lake park. i have read some of the comments and would hope that maybe some of you would like to form a group, maybe citzens for the preservation of the bluee streak or tumble bug. both rides are antique, being the 6th wooded coaster has to stand for some thing. i read about this group that got an organization together the help restore the leaps and dips coaster in lakemont park. i have been there, and that park is small, but got alot of notice due to that coaster. we need to work that angle so that the park has to stay open for that reason. i would be willing to due some marketing technique around my area, and maybe some of you could due the same thing. maybe we could all go the the pumpkin festival!!!WE MUST SAVE THE PARK !!!!! i had know idea that it even closed for awhile , my last visit was 08/97, and at that time the park seemied in a rebirth state...please contact me....lets all join the band wagon and save our memories for our future families!!!!!!!jennifer short

Glad to see that parks like these still live on in the wake of the Mega Parks. I plan on bringing my children here someday now that I know it is still operating. My family has been homeowners in Conneaut Lake Park since 1942, long before I was born. My great-great grandfather McClure sold the land that became the park. (His house still stands behind the Flynn house beside the fence) and is destined to be torn down. I grew up in the park and spent every summer with my grandparents helping clean the cottages she rented and living in the big house beside the Reed Avenue shelters. Although the house had to be sold back to the park when my grandparents died, my parents still own the cottage behind the house and I still spend a lot of time there. I remember the fun house, the old arcade and gift shop near the lake in the building that's been torn down. The Log Cabin restaurant where the gift shop is now. The Wild Mouse across the street was my favorite ride until I was tall enough to ride the Blue Streak. The grocery store across from KiddyLand. The Friday night's at the ballroom with the bands are a favorite memory of my teen years. I remember the big companies coming in with their picnicsand not being able to park at the cottage. Times have changed but part of the park still remains. I still take my boat to the lake, it's the best around and I visit all my family who still reside in Conneaut Lake. No matter what happens the memories still remain. It's my personal history.

Today, I am sitting back at my desk at the Teamsters Local Union No. 261 in New Castle, PA after a fun filled day celebrating the Annual Picnic with Teamster members and their families, and our retirees. We reserved the entire bank of the Reed Avenue Shelters, and it was a wonderful site as I glanced down the pavillions seeing over 2,000 people perhaps revisitng days of yesteryear with old buddies or making memories with new friends. Everyplace you turned there was laugher, and squeals of children and grandchildren anxious to take in the park...tables brimmed with food and the grills were all fired up sending a wave of smoky haze and smells through the warm summer breeze. The park it self was very clean and although a few rides were under repair, there was plenty of great rides running. I had the opportunity to stroll down through the park with my Mom for a few minutes and we eached reminiced our childhood memories of trecks to the park over 3 generations. Our event was a great success and wish to thank the entire staff of Conneaut Lake Park for their cooperation, hospitality and extend best wishes for continuting the preservation and restoration work at the Park . Lou, It is great to see the pictures of CLP. When I lived in Pittsburgh, I would go there several times a year. I am still disappointed in the Fun House closure in the 70's and the decision made in 1987 to rip out Dracula's Cave (formerly Pit of Death). In my opinion, those were the best two rides. When I went there in the mid 90's, I saw one of the gags from Dracula's Cave peering down on me from the outside balcony of the dance hall; it was the gyrating girl from the first gag as you entered the ride. I wonder what became of it. If anyone has any information on the Fun House or Dracula's Cave, I would appreciate it. I am looking for gags, artifacts, people who worked on the rides or even sketches of the rides layouts if anyone still remembers. Thanks, Rich

I grew up at the park. Between it and Idora Park in Youngstown, growing up in the 50's was alway a thrill come summer school break. Now, we are planning on returning after relocating back to OHIO from Florida and show our grandchildren what I experienced. I'm looking forward to the additions that come from Idora Park and also the BLUE STREAK which I feel all teenage girls scream in delight, expecially with that special "guy" sitting next to you. Now my husband and I can take that thrill ride. Thank you for bringing the park back to where it belongs.

I've been going to the park since 1950 as a very young girl, back in the days of the Fun House with the big fat laughing lady in the window. I appreciate the work that has been done there to keep it preserved. This year it is the best that I have seen it . My husband and I visted the Park on Memorial Day afternoon. Even then there were still quite a few people in attendance. On Monday, the Meadville newspaper had an article regarding the highly successful opening weekend. Although the article was well written, I do wonder why the author buried it back on Page 9, when they had an article on Page 3 regarding some insignicant Park in Titusville. I was disappointed to say the least, but not surpised. I spend a lot of time and money in the Conneaut Lake Area and I continue to see a pattern of non support of the Park by residents of Conneaut Lake and Meadville. Although I am not 100% sure, I have heard that most donations and support come from the Pittsburgh and Cleveland areas. What a shame, when you think of revenue gains brought in by the Park. I know I plan to spend time there this summer. PS: I met the Director of Operations and was impressed with the "rolled up sleeves" and enthusiasm towards the Park.

It is small but the rides are great and the people are nice. My favorite thing is 4th of July the fireworks are so pretty over the lake!!! Please stay open!! This is a def treasured memory! I too, fell in love with CLP. It is probably the only example of a classic amusement park left in the US. It has all of the elements--a wooden coaster, a carrousel, a Tumble Bug, a ballroom and a hotel, all located on the largest natural lake in PA. CONNEAUT LAKE PARK NEEDS YOUR HELP!!! For the past several years it has been struggling to stay alive. Gross mismangement and embezzlement several years ago ran the park into the ground. If you love CLP, PLEASE visit and tell everyone you know to visit in 2006 (assuming it reopens). CLP needs everyone's help to survive. Please spread the word and do what you can!

I grew up in Pgh. and spent every summer at the park where my parents would rent a cottage. this was in the 30's 40's and early 50's. My favorite places beside the beach were the pony track and the riding stable. A storage building now is where the pony track was and Camperland where the stable was. I now live far away but have visited in the last few years. Something about Conneaut gets in your blood and never leaves!!

I am a 48-year-old former native of Sharon,PA and clearly remember just just how wonderful Conneaut Lake was and, by the photos on your website, still is!! I am delighted to see that you have held mightily to your convictions of keeping Conneaut true to its history so that my husband can see just how Conneaut looked when I enjoyed my summer visits in the 60's & 70's, and as my dad did in the 1940's, and as my grandfather did at the turn of the century. I can still remember the smell of the peanuts being roasted on the midway, and the cotton candy & best candy apples in the universe! I held onto my Jungle Cruise pin as long as I could, but it unfortunately disappeared over the years. Your website reminded me of so many little things- - the "real" mane & tails of the carousel horses,the Westinghouse picnics, and the really cool things in the arcades (the original edison stop-motion machines, skee-ball, the duckpond with numbers corresponding to prizes on the wall, and the "windowshade" line that you pulled to get a corresponding prize!)Let us also not forget Fairyland Forest, which I loved visiting as a child! My favorite thing, though, was the Conneaut Lake Railway train ride through the tunnel where one would see windows showing treasure and a miniature carnival or mini-Conneaut! How wonderful to remember, and thanks for taking me back!! I cannot wait to visit Conneaut next year and try to scrape together a family reunion picnic in the groves!!

Great Pictures! I go back to CLP every summer. Conneaut Lake Park and the Hotel are now a non-profit Org. Please send donations to keep this place running. They have their own website to obtain phone #'s to donate. Don't let this park die. Kids and Adults alike will have a great time here.

Really awesome pictures, they brought back so many memories. I started going to the park in the 60s. My parents would vacation there for a couple of weeks every summer. We spent days at the beach and nights at the Dreamland Ballroom. As we got older we progressed to the beach club and cow shed. I even spent my honeymoon there. What a great old park, like a trip back in time.

Thanks for sharing your photos. I grew up in Pittsburgh and my parents had a little get away between Linesville and the Ohio line. Every summer we would load up the car and spend two or three weeks up there. One of my high lights was being able to go over to (CLP) ‘Park’ one day of every summer vacation. I remember when Fairyland Forest opened and I went through it, I was a tad too old to appreciate the effort spent at that time (maybe around 13 years old). I returned in early adult hood once or twice and enjoyed it even more. I reside in Texas and haven’t been back to Pa since the late 80’s. I hope to drive on through my childhood memories in a year or two and will certainly stop by CLP. JN in Texas

My oldest is 9yrs. old she loves Conneaut Park because she doesn't have to stand in line for hours to ride. Last year she was big enough to do the water slides. Talk about a happy child! Last year, 2003 my youngest was 6 months old. We took her on the Scooters and she laughed out loud. We ended up taking her on them about 4 times. Conneaut is the most family oreinted park around.Kiddiland is great, Baby station is wonderful for moms with babies, the big rides are fun(was sorry to see witches wheel gone)and the boardwalk area with shade trees are perfect for a rest. I would love to see them offer outdoor concerts again. The 80's groups are always a good draw to parks! any one looking for a family outing this is the place!

I am seeking information on the opening of Conneuat Lake Park, in reguards to a glass tomahawk,or hatchet that is about 10 inches long and in perfect condition. This item was obtained at the Grand opening of the park.Many yearts ago.What would the value of this item be? Would anyone wish to see this item. We live in Kossuth Pa.,Which is on 322. Our club Buffalo Polka Boosters ran a bus trip to Conneaut for an overnight stay.We can for the June Polka Days, and can't wait to return for the August Polka Days. WE enjoyed the hotel, and the amusement park, and a group of us are now called THE BLUE STREAKERS! I mean 40- 50-60 year old's riding this..WHAT A RIOT>>> We will promote this park as much as we can. It's nice to see the park getting "good" press for a change. I grew up with the park. My Great Uncle, Henry Anderson, ran the putt putt golf in the park for years. Back then it was up by the beach where the aplitheatre is today. It brings back many memories. Thanks!

What a delightful surprise to see the pictures of Conneaut Lake Park on your Web site! I was born and raised in Meadville and when I was a little girl, my Mother and Dad used to take me out to the Park on the streetcar. In the 20's my Dad built a home on the East side of the lake and later in the 30's built on the West Side, so I spent a good part of my life on the Lake and of course, at the Park. When our daughter was born, we took her to the Park and of course her favorite was the Merry-Go-Round , just as mine was when I was a little girl. Incidentally, I am now 92 years old and live in North Carolina. Many thanks for bringing back so many memories.

Wow! I'm from Edinboro, Pa - spent many days over the years at CTP! I used to get off the Blue Streak, run back around, and get on it again! I wasn't sure the park was still open - great shots!! Dave Z

I grew up in Conneatutville, a town not far from the park. My best memories of Conneaut Lake Park are from going there every year at the end of the school year. One day at the end of the year, we boarded the bus and went on "Valley Day" with all our friends. It was so cool, the ultimate field trip!!!! Thanks for the nostalgic pics!

Hi Lou, Thanks for sharing the Conneaut Lake Park pictures. I am from Cleveland, too, and went to Conneaut every year as a kid. We stayed at the old hotel. The Blue Streak there is why I love roller coasters to this day! :) I would love to go back there sometime. Thanks again for sharing, all of your pictures are great! Cindie
