Do some homework and check out the maintenance programs of the major government agencies that often have vehicles for sale as surplus. Some agencies have better maintenance programs than others. When I worked for a state agency in New Mexico, we had one of the best auto maintenance programs I have ever seen. When those cars were sold as surplus, they had a lot of life left in them. Conversely, some of the vehicles I saw at auction from other agencies were junk a car.

Examine the items at the pre-auction showing to accurately determine their condition. If you are bidding on a car, take a mechanic with you. It might only cost you a case of beer, but it could save you a lot of money.
