I heard young Red-shouldered Hawks calling from the woods beyond the edge of our yard. I knew that a pair of Red-shouldereds had nested just across the valley. I took my camera and sneaked into the woods, moving slowly and as stealthily as I could. I soon came upon two juvenile Red-shouldereds sitting on branches in the same tree. This one had its wings lowered. I could hear the adults calling out over the valley and at first I thought this one was covering some food that it was eating, but when it moved its wings there was nothing under its talons.
I took a few photos then quietly moved back the way I had come, so I wouldn't disturb them too much. Of course they were aware that I was there. This one was looking at me as I took this photo, but didn't seem too concerned.
