Twinforks, Satellite Bull 2012 Rut
This picture is ripping sharp. Nothing like a little light and no fog.

Boxley Stud at Sunrise
Elk photography will be good for a long time to come in Boxley Valley even as the rut is slowly tailing off.

Boxley Stud, Cow and Calf -- Backlit Frost
Super tough shooting conditions yielded few usable shots. This is the biggest bull in the valley this year. A great bull, the Boxley Stud, a multi-year herd bull. The 2012 rut is slowly waning now, but will go on at least another month.

Bull Elk Fight, Second in 8 Days
This was a very difficult shot to get. I had to shoot straight into the rising sun hitting a frost covered field. My exposure was to overexpose +1 stop to open up the dark colored head and neck area of the elk. It was at times blindingly bright.
I could not be more pleased with this elk fight shot. I think it is a totally unique moment. The two are briefly nose-to-nose, and making eye contact. I have never seen this before.

Elk Crossing of Buffalo National River
This is a pretty standard crossing. The herd bull is with his cows and off camera is a satellite bull hoping to catch a stray.
