Capital of the Osman Turks before moving on towards eventually Istanbul. Great city at the foot and along the flanks of a fine mountain complex (Uludağ, Big Mountain). Famous for its silk. Now within easy reach from Istanbul (one hour from the main busstation to the Yalova-Istanbul ferry, then if your are in luck straight onto the ferry, and an hour later you are at the Yenikapi jetty in Istanbul). This city is a must.
Several spots can be found using the maps option.

İstanbul’a ulaşım çok rahat (otogardan Yalova-İstanbul feribotuna bir saatte gidiliyor; şanslıysanız beklemeden feribota biniyorsunuz ve bir saat sonra İstanbul Yenikapı iskelesindesiniz). Bu tarihi şehri güzel fotoğraflarınızla belgelediğiniz için çok teşekkür ederim. Tarihimize sahip çıkılması noktasında siz Batılılar kadar hassas değiliz maalesef. Hüdavendigar (I. Murat) Camii'nde sizin tanık olduğunuz restorasyon felaketi bunu bir kez daa gözler önüne seriyor. Anadolu'nun kimbilir nerelerinde daha nice eser kimbilir böyle heba oldu. Umarım tarihimize sahip çıkma noktasında hem bu ülke halkı hem de yöneticiler daha hassas davranır. Dünyanın en büyük uygarlıklarına ev sahipliği yapmış bu güzel ülke, bir tarih cenneti olarak dünyadaki yerini alır. Bunun öncelikle ve öncelikle bu ülkede yaşayan bizlere çok büyük görev düşüyor. Sahip olduğumuz bu muhteşem tarihi güzelliklerin farkına varalım ve koruyalım. Aksi taktirde geçmişimize dair geleceğe hiçbir şey kalmayacak. İşte bu korkunç olur.

Ah güzel memleketim Bursa. 35 yıl önce ayrıldım senden ama artık geri dönüp burada yaşamımı noktalamak isterim. Bu fotoğraflarla 40 yıl öncesine döndüm ve çok duygulandım. Hala birçok sokak 40 yıldır değişmemiş, ne güzel. Bu sokaklarda aşık olup dolaştım, şimdi ise bu sokaklara aşıkmışım meğer.. Bana çok şey hatırlattın bay Osseman, teşekkürler. RAŞİT

I first answer your question regarding captions. I have changed my system over the years, and I hope you do not expect me to change captions I have written 5, 6 years ago simple because I have used another naming system? Indeed taking them with sometimes large intervals is part of the reason why I do not bother. The while complex is the Muradiye complex, and the individual grave buildings (türbeler) carry the name of the main occupant. So the names are equal, though different. As for the misattribution, I think you are right, I'm working on that.

Thank you for the pictures. They are very good. They are also a good reference to identify more precisely some of my own pictures, sice some sites are poorly or erroneously documented in other sources. By the way, you too made a mistake, easily identifiable from your other pictures : picture 28790265 is clearly similar to picture 38638410 which belongs, according to you, to Sehzade Mustafa tomb, and it is clearly not in the Cem Sultan tombs. BTW, why do you have two distinct captions "Bursa Cem Sultan tombs" and "Bursa Muradiye complex grave Cem Sultan" for photos of the same tombs (apparently taken at different times). I do regret having too little time available when I visited Bursa. Your pictures are a nice complement.

Thank you for the pictures, I had never seen any of Bursa, where my armenian grand father came from, before being deported to Syria in the beginning of 20th century. Thank you for his memory through these pictures.

I spent a year just on the out skirts of Bursa. Between Bursa and Gemlik. It was a great year. Had lots of good times there. Bursa was and is a very beautiful city. L:ots of history there. Summer was very nice but the winter up where we were was very cold and snowy. It's been almost 30 years since being there but still have fond memories of it.

yes dick great pictures of a great city which is bursting with history. i was born there and came to the uk when 2 yrs old in 1971. i did go back to go to a private school for 2 years. i go back at least once a year but not in winter so the winter shots are extra fascinating to me. it would be good if the city officials marketed this great city better to attract more widespread tourists. as bursaspor are champions( hooray!) this year maybe there will be more coverage to the city. keep up the good work dick my old mucker!

I was born in Bursa and have my extended family living there. I came to the UK in 1973 and been here since. I visit family back 'home', but not often enough! These photos are a great reminder of the city and portray seasons that we tend not to see as we visit in the summer. Please keep adding more. I would love to see some of Davutkadi, one of the earliest settlement areas of Bursa.

Bursa is one of my favorite memories of Turkey. Linda Scharff took me and a group of ladies on tours called "Lets Talk Turkey". I loved shopping in Bursa for antique textiles and silk. The Hamams were awesome!

Su sesi ve kanad þakýrtýsýndan Billur bir avizedir Bursa'da zaman ... 1993'te Uludað Ing. Ogret. kazandigimi ogrendigimde 1 hafta agladim gitmem de gitmem diye. Simdi guzel Bursa'mda cok iyi bir isim/kariyerim ve herseyden onemlisi severek-sevilerek evlendigim esim ve 2 mukemmel yavrumla mutlu bir yasantim var. Great photos of a fantastic city. Makes you want to experience the beauty and antiquity. I couldn't believe the wonder of the ultra modern shopping mall in the midst of all the history. It's amazing how the ancient can co-exist with modern buildings and not be despoiled. Kudos to the people of Turkey. And to you Dick for such a great documentary. Great captions too!

An Os is an ox in Dutch, a man a man. So Osseman means something like He who has an ox. Nothing Turkish about it. Dick is from Richard and is an English name. There is a very funny book by the professor (G.L. Lewis) that wrote the best grammar for English speaking people so far about the history of the Turkish language reform: The Turkish language reform: A catastrophic success. By GEOFFREY LEWIS. Oxford & New York: Oxford University Press, 1999. He describes how at some point even words like bisiklet and tuvalet (whých are French) were shown to be Turkish. But thanks anyway.

Hello, I have born in Bursa, first capital of '' Osmanlý Ýmparatorluðu'', I wonder if you know the root meaning of your nick-name ie. Osseman ?, which almost the same as Osman, but in real OSSAMAN , when interpreted means, OS_SA_MAN > US_SA_MAN > a clever and healty man.. in fully turkish, .. OS_MAN > US_MAN > a clever man.. well, DICK > DI_CE_KÝ > a strong man who is able to reach to the land of God.. Yes, here is like paradise. So many Turkish artist born at this city. In same season you can ski at uludag after you can swim in sea. So many people buy drinkable water from bursa. Its so soft and first quality natural water. Bursa baths(hamam) so important for healt.Hamam's water generally natural hot also have so many mineral. You must see Bursa city minimum one times in your life.

I was born in England and have lived here all my life, but I have visited Bursa every summer since I was a child. I love the city and would love to be able to spend more time visiting all the nice places, but I just don't know where they are :( I see wonderful pictures, but want to see them with my own eyes. Wow, this is amazing! My pen pal comes from Bursa and she sent me postcards and pictures, but seeing all the pictures make me want to visit even more. This beautiful country is one I would love to see in my life. Lots of history and culture. How wonderful as a teenager to have a foreign friend from this country that I could learn from. My only concern is, Is it safe to go to Turkey with all the war going on? Thanks to Dick for all his work. I can only imagine how many hours it takes one man to do all this. I would love to be a friend to another Turk who would want an american friend.

Although I have visited many of the sites of my adopted country, for some reason, I have never seen this famous place. Regarding the last question: I visited all the places you see as an ordinary tourist - which I am. If you behave properly you can visit all these places without a problem. As a matter of fact, it is quite nice to sit in, for instance, the Ulu Camii for a while and watch the children running up and down, or people sitting near the fountain relaxedly, while others may be busy with their prayers - or make conversation with you as a foreigner.

Dick thanks for the wonderful photos of Bursa. I too visited this city in November 2005 with friends from Ankara and Golbasi. The most memorable place I saw was a restaurant up the mountain side with this very large tree which I believe it to be 900 years since it was a seedling. The mnodern part of Bursa was also wonderful with some of the most enjoyable surroundings and scenery to view. Simply a beautiful city with heritage and history galore!

I would love to see more photos from the original settlement areas of Bursa like Davutkadi where there are still streets with houses and gardens. My grandparents from my fathers side settled from Greece and from my mothers side from Bulgaria way back in the 1940's. Far too much of Bursa is now devoted to flats and how wonderful it would be to capture the 'old' Bursa before these wonderful homes get demolished and we lose the 'Green Bursa' (Yesil) that we all love.

I took the ferry in Istambul and cross the Marmara sea to Yalova and then by bus. I remembered the hospitality of turkish people and the city near the mountains. I will travel again there. I've been to hammam's all over Turkey, and the Bursa Eski hamam (men's side) is one of the best. It's worth the visit for that alone, not to mention a tram ride to the top of the mountain, or a visit to the 'green' mosque. Yani don't forget bursa when travelling western turkey!

Very nice pictures of Bursa! We arrived here in May 2006, and we will live here for 3 years (we are Belgian, and I have been relocated by my company for 3y). We experienced a great summer! met really nice people, and are enjoying every single minute of our stay in Bursa! People, when you visit Istanbul, take a ferry and come to Bursa; it is more than worth it.

Mr.Ossemann I am from Bursa and I am quite disappointed when I see photos of Bursa.. Although you took photos of many mosques and interiors, Cumalýkýzýk and gypsies and snow viws, I couldnt find an image of modern Bursa, the city center, nice views of spring whre youcan see the green of Bursa, seaside like Mudanya.. Bursa is not a city of Gypsies or Cumalikizik children but it is the 4th largest city of Turkey with many modern buildings,people.. To reflect a city you should view all not a touristic interesting parts..Anyhow conragulations for your work..

Magnificent city possessing past history in its every cobblestone. Spent 4 years during my university education, but I could visit every place again now if I had the time. If you're travelling Turkey you shouldn't miss Bursa. It was the capital of Ottomans that is enough to visit by itself.

Dear Mr Osseman, Firstly I would like to appriciate your great "work" about Turkey. I am from Bursa; but I am currently living in Ankara for my university education. I realize that during your travels to Bursa, you had not gone to Trilye (Zeytinbaðý). It is 40 km from Bursa and 15 km from Mudanya and I think Trilye is a "must" for Bursa travels. For your next Bursa visit, I strongly recommend you to visit Trilye.

Hi, I am from Bursa but I have been living in the UK for the past 32 years. I have searched on numerous occasions to find photos of Bursa that depict daily life and show Bursa in winter so it was lovely to find these. My family still live in Davutkadi near Yildirim so it was great to relate to the city and the many sites I have visited myself! Wow! These pics are taken from such an angle that i felt like jumping into my monitor to be there. Almost feels like you are there when you look closely. I feel so homesick now..hoped even to see some familiar faces...maybe..who knows. My hometown, my family...i miss you..Thanks for refreshing those great memories of a great city dude. Keep it on.
