Water queue, Skenderija

Skenderija, Sarajevo

Skenderija was a dangerous neighborhood during the seige. It was exposed to sniper fire, close to the Serb lines, and open to artillery and mortar fire. Because the central water system no longer worked, citizens had to go to water queues and fill containers, then lug them home. The Serbs targeted the water sources. Five people died at this one a few days earlier and some of those in line were not happy to see me. The woman in the red jacket told me to leave. An older man quietly admonished her to be polite and she started to cry.
