The parents of these two kids tried their hardest to keep life normal for them. They were refugees from a nearby town that the Serbs had taken over. The building they lived in was fired upon by heavy machine guns and was pretty dangerous. They lived normally in the rooms on one side of their apartment, but the rooms on the other side were exposed to the Serbs' bullets. Once the girl dashed into one of the wrong-side rooms to grab a jacket drying on the clothesline her dad had rigged up. She darted in, snagged the jacket and ran back. Just as she cleared the door machine gun bullets splattered on the wall. She laughed fiendishly like she'd just played a rude trick on somebody. She was nine years old.
