50 K second wave

Anchorage, Service High School

The Tour of Anchorage started this morning at 10 am. I was there at the start, shot this photo, and decided to head home and make myself an espresso before driving over to the finish. The top skiers in the 50 k race take about 2:10 to complete the course. While enjoying an espresso in my apartment, I downloaded my pictures from the SD card and looked them over. I decided I like this one of the top women heading out, so I made a jpeg to size for PBase.com and uploaded it. Here it is, and I've still got an hour until the finish of the race. I remember in Bosnia, 1993, watching Christianne Amanpour do a live stand-up for CNN. I had 20 rolls of film in my bag which needed to get to New York. Here she was broadcasting live to the entire world, and I knew that the soonest my film would see publication would be 10 days. I said to myself, "a way of life is coming to an end!" Now I walk around town with a small shoulder bag which holds the power to make superb images and transmit them instantly around the world. But also in the bag is the same old Leica M3 with Tri-X. In fact, right after I shot this photo I pulled the M3 out and made a few snaps. In the photo are Kasandra Rice, 42, who finished 2nd; Kate Arduser, 41, 3rd; Rachael Steer, 43, 4th; Christina May, 47, 6th, and Becky Hauser, 46, 7th.
