Excellent bomb shelter

Opuzen

One thing about wars in the former Yugoslavia: there's plenty of leftovers from previous wars. This excellent bomb shelter, carved into solid rock, was allegedly built by the Germans in WW2. That may be true. It also could have been built by the krauts in WW1, or maybe by the Turks. I was walking around the Metkovic area when the air raid siren went off. Immediately a JNA fighter came screaming down the canyon and dropped a bomb. I was not in a good spot....but suddenly a VW stopped and the guy yelled "jump in!" When he found out I was an American he took me to this bomb shelter. He said that some 20 years earlier he got lost from his ship when it was loading cargo in Chicago. He couldn't speak any English and didn't know what to do. A man who could speak some Polish, sort of mutually intelligible with Croatian, asked him what the problem was, then gave him a ride to his ship. He told me he was returning the favor.
