She grew up a block up and block over in our little town.
We all knew each other because they had a house
full of girls and we had a house full of boys.
We were all told it would never work.
They were Democrat and Catholic.
We were Republican and Baptist.
All of us were suspicious this was a ploy
to keep all us young ones apart.
You would think our parents would know
that life and living would do it for them.
We all grew up and spread to the winds.
Then one day while visiting my home town
I was sitting in my pickup contemplating my next move.
That problem solved itself.
A beautiful woman with long brunette hair and sunglasses
in a Firebird convertible pulls up beside me.
I looked over and with a big smile she gestures for me to get in her car.
I did and was never the same.

Life is funny! It’s like a card game
We get dealt a lot of hands.
Some days the cards go against you, most days it’s a draw.
Then that one day it’s a Royal Flush, all hearts.
I still have the Queen from that day
and still strive to be the King she drew.
