1941 Dodge Luxury Liner Sedan with "Butterfly" chrome grille. The advent of the Forties saw US car manufacturers moving more and more to horizontal grille themes and away from narrow vertical themes so successfully marketed by Packard and others throughout most of the Thirties. In 1958 Edsel reintroduced the verticle grille with no success. It took Pontiac to eventually reintroduce this theme successfully when it introduced the Grand Prix in 1969 as a specialty luxury coupe.
