My parents courted in one, they married in 1942. My mother also learned how to drive in it. They alway had fond memories of that car. Dad purchased it in 1941 from a neighbor. It was originally purchased at Schilling in Memphis, TN. My parents drove it and then left it behind at my grandparents home and while it was there, was stolen, recovered and my dads kid brother drove it afterwards. It was a tan colour with a black top and red leather interior.

1939 Mercury Convertible Coupe. This is it. The very first Mercury. Ford Motor Company's entrance in the medium price field. Styling wise, it bore a strong family resemblence to the Fords of that era, with a pointed prow, curved fenders, and rounded body lines. One of its main features was a column mounted gear shift. It was offered in four body styles including the convertible shown, a two door sedan, a two door coupe, and a four door town sedan. Prices ranged from $ 916 for the two door sedan, to $ 1,016 for the convertible coupe shown in Ken's photograph. Approximately 75,000 Mercurys were built in that first model year. The new Mercury was powered by a 239.4 flathead V-8 developing 95 horsepower and rode on a 116 inch wheelbase.
