How to Win Federal Bids

Ways to Win Federal Bids

Every other organization – be it small or big will grow better if they have the federal agency to support them. Getting hold of a federal agency might not be a very easy task. There will always be a lot of competition and only a few of the organizations are lucky enough to win a bid. Small businesses have to be careful in placing the right bid or else they will be disqualified. Always make sure to learn the process and how these agencies work. This can help you to win contracts. So, to outbid all of your competitors you will have to tick all your check boxes.

How a Contract System works

The federal agencies are supplied with goods and services from General Services Administration (GSA). This helps the government agencies to get hold of a variety of services from a wide sphere of industries. In order to buy these goods and services and to fulfill the needs of a federal agency, you will require ‘Schedules’ – which opens up contracting opportunities for businesses to win a federal contract.

Steps to winning a federal contract

1. Always register your organization at SAM: Before you start to bid for contracts, it is important to register your organization at System for Award Management (SAM). A few of the things that are required are your DUNS number and your NAICS code.

2. Get Schedules: To get access to government contracts, you will have to win a Schedule award. For this purpose, you will have to get all your documents and send them to GSA – who in turn will review your submission and decide whether to approve it or not. Every document that you will send across must be checked that it satisfies all their requirements. Thus, it is essential for the reviewer to scrutinize every document minutely.

Finding federal bids

After you are all done with the first two steps, we look for federal bids. There are a number of ways to find a federal bidding opportunity. Some of the following ways are –

  1. Earlier, if one needs to find a contract opportunity, their main source was the Federal Business Opportunity website. But now you have a lot of options to consider. Some may be helpful while others may not be – so you need to choose wisely. Many a time, government agencies are required to publish the contracts that are above a certain amount. This opens up the opportunity for all the potential bidders. Contracts that are below the fixed amount are advertised on a government charge card – for which you will need a contracting officer to see when a bid open.
  2. If you are still struggling to find federal bids, get assistance from Procurement Technical Assistance Centres (PTACs). They can help you to find out if your business meets all the criteria or not.
  3. If in any case, you have a small business then you can fill out your business details at Dynamic Small Business Search. This search engine is used by many federal agencies that are looking for small businesses to carry out their contracts.
  4. Several websites provide you with information on how you can win a federal bid. They send you notifications based on the history of the bid, market, and tools.
  5. Subcontracting is another way to win federal bids. All you got to do is make a list of all the prime contractors who require subcontracting. The information is usually published on the General Services Administration (GSA).
  6. Lastly, if you are new to this field or finding it difficult to get contracts then you should hire a professional – who in turn can help you avoid mistakes right from the onset.
