Located in northern Tanzania and extending to southwestern Kenya the Serengeti is a vast ecosystem spanning 12,000 square miles, giving rise to its name which is derived from the Maasai language and means "endless plains." The Serengeti encompasses Serengeti National Park and a number of protected game reserves and conservation areas maintained by the governments of Tanzania and Kenya. The region hosts the largest mammal migration in the world and is a popular destination for African safaris. While the Serengeti is known for it seemingly endless Savannahs the landscape can be divided into two regions defined by their dominant vegetation — woodland and grassland. It is famous for its annual migration of over 1.5 million wildebeest, 250,000 zebra and hundreds of thousands of other hoofed animals which of course draws a diverse and large number of predators. We have visited various regions of the Serengeti during different times of the year to experience some of the area’s highlights.
