Namibia

Namibia home to the Namib Desert and strange surreal places like Deadvlei, Sossusvlei and Hiddenvlei. it is home to the primative Humba peopleand is a land with some of the most amazing geographic diversity one will find on earth. It lies along the Atlantic Ocean on the western edge of Southern Africa, bordered by South Africa on the south, Angola on the north and Zambia and Botswana on the east. Namibia is a country of stunning contrasts with two great deserts, the Namib desert the oldest desert on the planet with its giant sand dunes along the Atlantic coastline, while the Kalahari is in the eastern interior, a vast and sparsely vegetated savannah. In between lies the Central Plateau, with open plains and rugged mountains.

It is a smallish democratic country of about 2 million people 90% of which are Christian, with an 85% literacy rate. Namibia previously under German, British and South Africa rule, gained its independence in 1990. The official language is English but like many African countries there are many tribal languages and dialects spoken. The country is fairly wealthy by African standards due to a huge mining, agricultural and fishing industry. Most of the country is uninhabited and its said to have the lowest population density of any country on earth. Our visit to Namibia took us along the Skelton Coast where the desert dunes tower over the Atlantic ocean. We spent time in Walvis Bay where there are fur seal colonies numbering in the tens of thousands. We also explored the far northern regions along the Angolan border, home of the primitive Himba people, as well as Etosha National park home of the great salt pans. Ultimately we made our way Sossusvlei a dry river valley surrounded by mountains and giant surreal sand dunes which glow red and orange.
