This old French Colonial pharmacy, formerly known as Botica La Francesa, was founded by Dr Ernesto Triolet and his wife Dolores in 1882 and stands unchanged today in the city of Matanzas, Cuba. It was operational until 1964 when it was transformed into The Museo Farmaceutico. Time has remained still here where many of the items that would have been found in a pharmacy during that time period can still be found here on the shelves.
Hand painted French porcelain vases, medical recipes, old bottles and jars, medical instruments, labels, mortars, scorpion oil and other seemingly ancient pharmaceutical items line the shelves. The Triolet couple, particularly Dr. Ernesto, used medicinal plants as main source for his medicine, which enjoyed excellent reputation among the country’s clientele and abroad. At the pharmacy there is evidence in the recipe books of more than 500,000 original formulas. Also treasured are around three million original labels of the products prepared there.
The pharmacy is located on Milanes Street in Matanzas across from the Old Parade Grounds (Plaza de Armas), now Libertad Park.
