While on Safari in Africa one has a lot of choices for camps and lodges. There are several choices for accommodations: Lodges, Permanent Tented Camps, Mobile Tented or Seasonal Camps and the more rustic Fly Camps or Light Mobile Camp. Lodges range from basic three star accommodations to the most luxurious five star structures. Safari lodges are fully permanent accommodations built out of stone, wood, thatch, bricks, mortar or a combination of all. Designs generally blend well into the African bush and contour the natural landscape, offering great views and similar amenities found in any hotel in the world. On our most recent photo expedition to East Africa we stayed at two lodges: “and Beyond’s” very luxurious Ngorongoro Crater Lodge perched on the rim of Ngorongoro Crater in Tanzania. In the southern Serengeti we stayed at the very picturesque Mwiba Lodge.

Permanent Tented Camps are non-movable permanent structures built on a concrete or wooden bases with canvas tent sides. In Amboseli we stayed at Tortilis Camp, located in a private game concession neighboring Amboseli National Park and in the southern Masai Mara we stayed on the mountainside at Cottars’ 1920’s Safari Camp which was celebrating its 100 year anniversary. One of our favorite lodges is Little Governors' Camp in the Masai Mara. Near the Mara River and known for it's diverse Big Cat population it is situated in the middle to one of Kenya's richest wildlife areas. Also highlighted are Kigelia Ruaha Lodge, Tarangire's Chem Chem Camp, Botswana's Duba Expedition Camp and Duba Plains Camp.

Mobile Tented and Seasonal Camps are often for the slightly more adventurous. Mobile tented camps are often erected for three to six month periods following the great migration and other wildlife movements, putting you in the best locations for game viewing. So to place us in the right location for the Great Migration’s annual birthing season we stayed Alex Walker’s Serian Serengeti South Camp which is set up for several months in a strategic location. To see the Great Migration as it crosses the Mara River our camp of choice is the strategically located Alex Walker Serian Camp Serengeti North Camp.
