Road-encounter.jpg

One of my favorite images!
Migrating species frequently use vehicle tracts during their long journey from the Serengeti to the Masai Mara
and back each year. The reason of this behavior is not clear, and as expected, vehicles frequently have to
slow down and wait as large herds of wildebeests move out of their way before they can continue on.
In these national parks the "Law" is that animals always have the right of way and vehicles must stop and wait
until animals decide to move as they choose. No harrasement is tolerated!
In this aerial view, a truck with local workers on their way to prepare a welcome breakfast in the open
for a group of balloon riders (that would be us), seemed to be in a rush and rather "pushed" their way
through a long line of wildebeests that was marching in the on that exact same dirtroad. I love the smooth
simetry of both group of animals at the side of the vehicles and the circular and obvious "action" and
commotion created by the animals in front of the vehicles. There were some animals that even challenged
the vehicle and initially refused to move out of the way (usually young and inexperienced individuals), which
eventually gave out creating a big tantrum with furious short runs, jumps and loud noises.
