Happy New Year everyone! For the past few years we've been trying to see at least one new waterfall on New Year's Day. Again thanks to Bernie, we were able to see 4 new ones! He had recently been doing some more exploring off of Hwy 178 in South Carolina just south of the NC border. I was up at Harry's for the week end. Cathy called because she knew we'd be up to something, so we met her and all 3 of us headed over to Bernie's New Year's Day morning.

Wild Hog Creek runs into Eastatoe Creek next to Hwy 178 about 1 1/4 miles south of the NC/SC border. We parked on the left at the red gate, then walked across 178 where Eastatoe Creek goes under the highway. It appears from the map that Wild Hog Creek is the dividing line between private and public property up to a point. All 4 of these waterfalls are on SC gamelands which is public property. A gravel/dirt drive runs up the left side of Wild Hog Creek on the private side, so what we did was to get on that drive and walk up it for a short distance. We soon came up on an abandoned greenhouse operation. Just up to road a short distance on the right appeared to be some green tin roofing either on a very small structure or just laying in the field. About half way between the greenhouses and the green roofing, we headed right towards the creek and crossed the creek at the point where another no name creek comes in to Wild Hog Creek. The drive does continue up and ends at the creek, but it's easier to cross back here. Just as soon as we crossed, we headed up the little ridge line. 3 of the waterfalls are on Wild Hog, but Bernie found the best way to get to them was to head up this little ridge which becomes an old overgrown logging road. In less than 10 minutes up it, we headed up the bank on the right which brought us up to another old logging road which was more obvious than the last. This curved back around to the left back to Wild Hog Creek and saved us having to bushwhack through the thick rhododendron along the creek. This old road first crosses another unnamed creek just before it crosses Wild Hog. A very faint trail heads up the right side to this 25' waterfall. All of these waterfalls are a bit overgrown and don't get many visitors - if any. The first waterfalls are just over 1/2 mile from the highway.
