Being the most important World War II memorial in Netherlands, the National Monument on the eastern side of Dam Square was designed by Dutch architect Jacobus Oud, with figurative sculptures carved by John Rädecker and his sons. Two heraldic lions guard the base, standing as traditional symbols of the Kingdom of the Netherlands.
