The Royal Palace of Amsterdam was originally built as the City Hall of Amsterdam in 1648. At the time, Amsterdam was one of the world’s richest trading cities. It became a royal palace in the Napoleonic era when Louis Bonaparte, brother of Napoleon, made it his residence in 1808. Today, the palace is used by the Dutch royal family for state visits and official receptions.
