The “dancing houses” of Amsterdam are the narrow canal houses that appear to lean and sway beside one another along the canals. They were constructed in the 17th century on wooden piles driven into soft, waterlogged ground. Over centuries, some foundations shifted slightly, causing the houses to lean.
