Flag and Frosty

Cold Bay Air Force Station

As a backdrop for the radar site flag, Frosty appeared larger than normal when viewed through a telephoto lens. Appropriately so, Frosty was the subject of many of my photos. On this occasion, I used my new telephoto lens to illustrate the dominance that Frosty had over our existence at Cold Bay. The lens caused Frosty to appear to loom over the radar site location. In my notes from 1970 I mention that it was a long drive up the mountain to a point just about halfway up the flagpole in this shot. I never made it any farther by vehicle. In my notes from the time, I mention that during winter it is impossible to get even that far by vehicle because of the "huge snow drifts." The rest of the way was on foot. That's not to say I made it to the top. Unfortunately, I never made it that far.
