Self Portrait

Cold Bay Air Force Station, AK

I took a self-portrait in the mirror of my bathroom. The Commander and I had the only two individual bathrooms on site. Our bathrooms adjoined, with a door between. For the sake of privacy, the door was kept closed. Sadly, our adjoining individual bathrooms led to an uncomfortable situation with the visiting generals.
Let me preface this story by stating that I have always been an independent cuss. That being said, while here for the hunt, the generals and their staff quartered in the main building. As acting C.O. it fell upon me to decide where they would sleep. Since the commander was on leave, I allowed two of the generals to bunk together in his room. After all, it was the largest sleeping quarters and had its own bath.
Shortly after they arrived, I took the three generals upstairs to the quarters that I had chosen for them. All three seemed satisfied, so I returned to my office downstairs. Surely enough, soon after, one of the general's aides came to me and complained that I should have given the use of my room with its bathroom to one of the generals. My response was a curt, "I am the captain of this ship! The generals wanted to come hunting. Let them have the complete experience."
After the frustrated aide turned and left my office, I chuckled to myself. He did not know that I had already put in my papers to leave active duty after this tour. What were they going to do to me... send me remote? By the way, after this trip by the generals one of them sent me a nice personal letter thanking me for my hospitality!
