approx 1941 Superior Telegram

Superior, Douglas County, Wisconsin

Superior Telegram clipping (date unknown war time 1940's)

The photo & story is interesting for this gallery to the extent that it includes mention of my uncle
Fr. John T. Rivard

Text with the photo is as follows:

Our priests at the the Cathedral of Christ the King rectory have really been able to sympathize with patients while making sick calls the last few days.
The reason: They have been very off and sore in spots themselves.
The reason: They have abandoned their cars for all ordinary porposes for bicycles for the duration.
The reason: To save tires, conserve gasoline and to put aside more money for government bonds.
The reason: To beat the axis.
The bicycle movement at the rectory was started by Fr. Annabring who amazed his colleagues one day by swooping up to the house on a two wheeler. Once he explained the reasons, three other priests did like-wise.
Now instead of cars parked in front of the rectory, four shiny bicycles stand in a neat row. Sick calls, to and from church, trips downtown and about the city all ride the bicycle now.
Even the conventional long coat has been abandoned for short, appropriately black jackets that won't interfere with the riding.
The priests did little boasting about their riding the first couple days of the experiment - aches and pains left no time for that.
But now that the first kinks have been straightened out, the've taken quite a fancy to riding their bikes.
They advocate that more people tie up thier cars and walk or ride bicycles because not only does it conserve material, but cuts down the pace of living.
As one of the clergyman explained, the fast pace is one of the reasons for the present war. Without cars, people won't be so apt to spend their time aimlessly riding about. But instead it will produce more harmony, they said.
The priests have adopted a slogan which they feel throws a favorable light on bike riding: "No man can be truly happy who cannot be happy in his own living room."
