My family moved to Meridian in late 1930's. Dad (S. Robert Johnston) was minister of the Christian Church (a wooden frame building) and the school my sisters attended was nearby. A Mr. Flack was Superintendant of the schools then and his son, Billy and I were pre-school age friends. I remember the houses had irrigation ditches around them which had certain days on which to be opened. My older sisters and I could walk to town on Saturdays to see the Lone Ranger matinees. I think I was banned from the theatre because I always refused to leave when it was time by stretching full length, hooking my feet under seat in front of me and my arms around my chair arms. ("Like a Tree that standeth by the Waters I could not be removed" by my sisters, nor the manager). I was about 4 at the time. I loved Saturdays downtown Meridian. The native Americans came to town (often in fulll dress) and sometimes sheep were driven through the streets. We went to church camp in the summer (Camp Ponderosa) on Payette Lake and it was beautiful! Loveliest place in the world. I'll always miss Meridian back in those days.

This city has grown so fast from when I lived their in the mid 60's, from less than 3,000, to almost 70,000. I can hardly recognize the city.

Our family moved to Meridian in 1957 and left in the fall of 1961. My dad was the pastor of the Christian Church, a white wood frame building located accross the street from the old red brick two story school house where I attended sixth grade. I still cling to numerus memories of those formative years. The dairy farm west of town where you could purchase a gal. of fresh milk with the cream still on top for 50 cents, the church lawn accross the highway from the 7th grade where boys would settle their disagreements, watching the new movie "Black Beauty" in the 9th grade school gym (the old high school) during lunch period, Vernon Law being presented the key to the city after winning the World Series, getting my very first drivers license, and the list goes on and on... I have recently been invited to attend the MHS class of 1964 reuion. It would be so great to attend the reunion and see Meridian the way I remember how it was in 1961. However, growth is good and change is advancement but friendships last a life time and that is one thing that can not be taken away. It will be fun to attempt to locate and/or retrace some the paths I walked as a child and do it with my Texan spouse of near 43 years at my side.

Boise, ID native. 53 yrs. I like to see Meridian/Boi preserve the old buildings. I personally don't like the heavy traffic congestion, and the influx of subdivisions. Can't fight progress.

I lived in Meridian during the Early 1990's when I was in Elementary School attending Linder Elementary and Meridian Elementary Schoo's . At the time I lived on what was then a dairy farm between Linder Road and Ten Mile Road on Franklin Road. I've been back to the area a couple of times since my family moved in 1994 and Boy things sure change a lot!

We are dying to move Meridian, from Naples Florida...originally from southern California. You all don't know traffic till you lived in CA! Even SW FLorida is terrible with traffic. Sounds like you at least creep...we just park on the roads and highways here...enjoy what you have!

My grandparents bought a farm in Meridian about 1932. My father was raised on that farm as were us kids, till about 1975. Meridian then was great! Not too bad now. Definitely needs more pedestrian friendly space downtown and all over. Too bad all the farmhouses have mostly gone the wayside, as did the one we grew up in eventually. Not a lot of history that's apparent to newcomers. Anyone remember the Rec Center downtown, slot cars downstairs, the 5 and dime store, the mercantile store where the Sunrise is now, with the staircase downstairs right inside the front door, the movie theater that the church now uses, traffic court in the old pink building?

I've lived in Meridian for 23 years now. Not sure all the changes have been that positive. It would have been nice to see Meridian turn into a more pedestrian friendly city.....as it stands you can only travel safely by car (and count on an ugly commute to get anywhere). Our little gem isn't as shiny as it use to be.

If you want to see the town as it looked in the 1950's, check out the highway safety film "Last Clear Chance" - it was shot in Meridian in 1959, and it's easy to find online.

sorry, but downtown Meridian, even a couple of years ago, looked like an abandoned dump. I am so glad the hideous warehouses are gone and there is some attempt at revitalization. Now, if they can just get the traffic to flow instead of creep, things will be great.

Loose the historic buildings, you loose the historic importance. And that makes for a worthless town. We still have a choice. If the city would listen. I guess we dont have much of a choice in that case.

I lived in the Treasure Valley from 1984 to 1988. I haven't had the opportunity to revisit the area since then. But from what I've seen here, it has CHANGED. I remember how the town was back then and I'm sorry to see it become like any other city you'd see in Silicon Valley, California.

Its too bad that meridian is letting there heritage go for progress. Sometimes towns need to keep the heritage of the buildings to say alive. All the old farm houses are gone just like the creamery. Soon the last famous farm house on meridian and ustick will be gone as well. Its all too sad.

Lived in Mt. Home in the early 70's (AFB "brat") Meridian was our HS rivals - it was a great little town when I was in High School...looks like a great little town to retire too! Looks clean, new, well thought out, all the amenities! Can't wait to visit next spring!

Wow! I forgot about McFadden's Market! Across from Murray's Electronics. I also forgot about the fire siren on the water tower above the firestation when it was on Meridian Road behind City Hall(was the police station). Volunteers from all around Meridian would drop everything at a moments notice to answer the alarm.

Don't forget about McFadden's Market and the Saddle Shop on East Broadway. I hope we will be able to rtain some of the OldTown of Meridian. I recall working at the Bon Marche when I was young in 1968. Let's don't lose our Heritage. We have already lost the Creamery "Smokestack". The future residents will appreciate the past no matter where they come from

We moved to Meridian in 1972, I was 6 ........ Life sure was different then as a kid, definitely a simpler time. We would scrounge bottles then redeem them at Don's Market to get money to go swimming at the city pool. And guess what, we walked or rode bikes everywhere. No rides from our parents! I also remember listening to the race cars at the race way on Saturday nights. Commenting on Native's comment..... I do remember there was only one stop light. I think of my childhood days in Meridian often and share the stories with my own kids. I attended Meridian Elementary from 72-75 (1st thru 3rd), then Meridian Intermediate 75-78 (4th thru 6th), then Meridian Jr. High for part of 78, before we moved.

June of 1970......I think the population was 973. We used to go door to door just to field a baseball team to play in the summer rec leagues. I wonder if there is anyone out there that remembers the Silver Shield gun shop or the Lil' Hickory Drive In. How about when Bill & Jerry's and Don's Market(Westby's Bicycle) were the only grocery stores to shop at! Here's one, only one stop light in the whole city,at Main St(formerly 1st St) and E Idaho. My how things change with the passing of time!
