A day in the life of Mae Hong Son, a sleepy provincial capital set amidst rugged, heavily-forested hill country near the Thai/Burmese border, northwest of Chiang Mai. Apart from trekking through the hills, there is not a great deal to do in the town itself, but that is part of its charm. In January the mornings are cool and misty, whilst not seeming overly chilly to any 'farang' visitor. At the morning and evening markets, and up on Doi Kong Mu, the steep hill behind the town, the local people wrap themselves up in woollen caps and scarves...
