I tried for over 10 hours to find that Western end of the tunnel but was unable. All I got for my effort as finding an old abandoned house. The eastern portal is in private hands and since he raises bullds and does not anyone to come on his property he buldozed in the eastern portal. The western portal I believe is buldozed in as well but I would ike to at least try to find it. I did come across some metal plates and RR spikes near the house. The house was extremely difficult to get to and loked like an Incan ruin. The ground from there just went up and up until I was looking down on a creek. I fought my way back down and from there walked for hours fruitlessly. I hope to find it someday as I am completing a book about the CGW RY.

My name is Craig and I was at the western portal of the Winston Tunnel (DNR Property) yesterday July 26, 2012. My disappointment was that I could not find the tunnel!!! I looked for over 10 hours and could not find it. NO markings. Jungle like terrain. The only thing I found was the remains of an old house. It looked like an Incan ruin. Not a level foorhold to be had. I also tried to find the eastern portal but a nice older lady off Irish Hollow road told me that her son in law brought the land that was thew eastern portal and fenced it in. He raises bulls and does not want them disturbed. She also told me that he took his buldozer and plowed on the entrance of the tunnel. I asked her if I could at least try to negociate with hiom, but she did not know him well enough (Her son in law!!) Next time I will bring proper gear for my search and make it a weekend project.

Hi Rick,my name is Dave from Berkeley.IL, I had visited the Winston Tunnel in the 1980's and the trestle was already removed before my visit to this area by the C&NW RR when they scrapped the CGW Railroad in this area during the early 1970's.I just seen your post written above from last June & thought that I would leave you a comment.

My Dad was a brakeman / conductor on this part of the CGW. How far from the West portal did the steel trestle begin. Based on aerial maps it looks like it was between the tunnel & Rock Hill Road. Thank You.
