And here we are! The Johnson Ridge Observatory is the end of this road, staring into the mouth of the crater. To give you a sense of scale, the observatory/view point is 5 miles from here to the nearest edge of the crater rim (which is why there is still a lot of haze). The lava dome, which has snow on it despite the fact that there is molten lava pushing it upwards, is itself higher than the Empire State Building. You can see that it still emits steam because of its perpetual state of eruptive activity.
