DSC_5938.jpg

The smallest owl in Europe and Asia. It is only about 16 cm long and weighs about 60 grams. It's extremely rare here. It's been the first visit of this species in this country since 2006 and 1999.

This mouse was caught right in front of my feet. I was so surprised and too close to get a shot of the actual catch moment.

Awesome shot, Torben! I can see where you would be surprised! Do you have snow on the ground? V

These owls must be putting a dent in the rodent population around that area? I am guessing that the rodent numbers were high this winter, inducing the owls to stick around. Terrific shot (though not for the poor little mouse)! V
