These are a species of Synoeca, family Vespidae. Don't worry, they usually give fair warning before they attack:-) Inside the nest they create an ominous, rhythmic drumming sound when disturbed, clearly audible from several feet away. The sting is just excrutiating according to a friend of mine who is a venom expert....
