Hey Guest, Typically dragonflies lay their eggs in the water. When they land they are resting and watching for something to eat. The height gives them an advantage by extending the range of their view, similar to osprey and other raptors that sit in tall trees, on ship mast, telephone poles, etc.

these are all over my backyard right now, so beautiful! I just moved here from the Pacific Northwest and have never seen anything like this. THEY EACH LAND ON THE TALLEST PIECE OF GRASS THEY EACH CAN FIND.COULD THEY BE LAYING EGGS/
