Paper mache

Wisconsin view map

I wanted to test an old Minolta MD mount macro lens out on my Sony SLT. I bought an adapter on ebay and it just arrived. Adapting an MD mount to an Alpha mount lens is akin to adapting FD to EF in the Canon line. Unless you buy an expensive adapter with glass, it is a no go. I found a $29 adapter that will allow this lens to work at close distances, which is all that is needed for macro work (it won't reach infinity). I tested it on a paper mache figure that I bought this winter at the Mexican Import market. No sharpening was applied. So now I have a 100mm f/3.5 macro. I already had the lens, but the total investment buying it used would only be about $200.

Jeff Logesky has agreed to host the new Challenge for April. Please watch for it tomorrow. I hope everyone will participate. You can post as many photos as you want to the Challenge. Bob, thank you for hosting the thought provoking Challenge for March.

I like all the details. A nice work of art.

Very nice detail Cindy. While I have been considering the focus stacking that Jim is talking about, the shallow DOF is perfect in this picture.

Well done, Cindy. You probably already know this, but you can achieve infinite dof even with the lens configuration you have by taking several shots and combining them in Photoshop. I've read quite a bit lately on this technique and am looking forward to giving it try later this year. Last October's edition of Outdoor Photographer had an excellent article on all the how-to's for this process.

Your photo is wonderful. I love the lighting and the arrangement of the props. Well done!

A remarkable close-up Cindy.
l'm pleased to see that you enjoy taking excellent photos with old gear.
With all the advertising hype we sometimes forget that it was possible
even in the 1800's to take brilliant photographs.

Looks like a winning combination to me.
