Dome in District Court Room

Columbus, Texas

This Tiffany style glass dome is in the 2nd floor District Court Room of the Columbus, Texas 1890 Colorado County Courthouse. Originally, the Courthouse had a tower. The July 21, 1909 hurricane tore off the roof and tower. Every room was damaged in the courthouse. Repairs were made, but instead of replacing the tower, a stained glass dome was added. In 1939 a basement was added to the building and in 1950 more space was added... this stress cracked the stained glass. It was removed and a false ceiling was put up. In 1978 the false ceiling was removed and the dome was restored. The umbrella-shaped glass sculpture was added in 1980. The Courthouse is a Texas Historical Landmark, a State Archaeological Landmark, and on the National Register of Historic Places. The Courthouse is still in use.

This is a beautiful image Cindy, and a wonderful story. So many of our new buildings lack this sense of grandeur.

The dome and the inverted umbrella light would stand out even in Italy, if you see what I mean, good work.

This is not so much a ceiling, more a piece of art, Fabulous!

This stained glass is a work of art Cindy,
and so is your superlative photograph.
Thanks for telling us the long history of this very artistic creation.

Cindy,

I love stained glass and this is quite remarkable. I can only imagine what it would look like with light streaming through it from above. Great find, even greater image!

That is one of the most spectacular stained glass
courthouse ceilings I have ever seen. I love the green
colors and especially the umbrella.

Pat, Terry and Michael. The courthouse is upstairs in the building. I was told to just go on up and to ask someone in an office to turn the light on for me. I ended up in this amazing room with wonderful old wood railings, "Bench", chairs, podiums and up above was this magnificent glass dome. I just sat there for about a half hour and took it all in. It was like turning back the clock to the early 1900's. Thank you for your comments.
Pat, I hope that you feel better soon. No hurry on the Challenge...Michael has given us till New Year's Day.

What a cool restoration. Beautifully photographed, Cindy.
The transmitted light is very jewel like; the colors are gorgeous.
