01/24/2012 Retirement of Richard "Red" MacKinnon Boston MA
01/24/2012 - On the evening of Tuesday, January 24, 2012 a celebration was held in Dorchester, at the Gallivan Boulevard firehouse for FF Richard "Red" MacKinnon who was serving his last tour. Richard MacKinnon was retiring after 43-years as a member of the Boston Fire Department. MacKinnon was appointed to the department on December 24, 1969 and was assigned to Ladder-10. His retirement date will be January 31, 2012, retiring from Engine-16, Aide to the District-8 Chief. In 1996, MacKinnon received a commendation from then Fire Commissioner Martin Pierce, after he helped stop a man who had stolen a woman's purse. He was able to positively identify the culprit after the police had apprehended him, approximately 20-minutes after the crime. The apparatus floor at Engine-16 was full of tables, chairs, friends, family, and co-workers, past and present. The well wishers came to share stories, laughs, and fond memories of working with MacKinnon through out his 43-years of service. The night was capped off when MacKinnon was presented with a clock plaque that was presented by members of Engine-16.
