the Schley in use

The Schley Products Universal OHC valve spring tool makes short work of disassembly or reassembly of the valvetrain. It is a fine American made tool.

I modified the stands slightly so as to fit the studs for the cam cover.

Besides being about ten times easier to use than a C-clamp type valve spring compressor for bench work, I use the Schley to remove valve springs and replace stem seals with the head still on the block. I love it.

Conn, I use a folded shop towel up under the valves in the combustion chamber to push up on the valves. An old worn out sock....nice and clean of course...will also do the job. Whichever that just fills the CC and lets the head sit flat on the bench.

There is no 'lock' on the Schley: you do have to maintain pressure on the handle while doing the keeper install or removal. A jig might help, but I just use a piece of cardboard on the benchtop, covered with shop towels or paper towels to protect the head surface.

For an on-the-block situation, you use the old rope-through-the-spark-plug-hole trick to hold the valves in place. The beauty of the Schley is that you 'can' do valve spring removal and installation without having to remove the head. I have C clamp type and the individual type spring compressor tools, which do fine for my OHV head work; and I like the Schley the best...for my OHC head work.
