Remote Controls

Tucson, AZ

These are my two antique remotes. The Zenith was for a b/w tv from around 1963-1966, and the RCA for a color TV around 1968. Both work. The RCA remote takes a AA battery and transmits ultrasonic tones, somewhere around 28kHz if I remember correctly. The Zenith "clicker" does not require a battery but works by the tuning fork method, where one of the four tuning forks is struck when a button is depressed and an ultrasonic tone is generated. We had that remote growing up and my dad would get pretty peeved when you would walk into the room and your keys or loose change would cause the channel to change or mute while he was watching TV.... Hope these bring back some memories....

These are fascinating vintage remote controls that started the whole life style of making viewers "couch potatos" glued to their chairs for hours on end....excellent! V

Okay, go easy on the "antique" word. Some of us are sensitive to that when applied to our lifetimes. I remember the early remotes (and the time when such a thing would have been considered science fiction) well. Actually, that RCA Victor remote, with controls for color, etc., was pretty sophisticated for the day. As I remember, on some of the earlier color TVs, the "color" was mostly green. Ah, the good old days! Thanks for the reminder.

Nice! The first “remotes” we had growing up was me and my siblings. I remember having a remote in the early 70’s that was a motorized unit that attached to the tuning knob. I think I remember it only rotated clockwise. Thankfully there were only 13 channels to flip through. I think we had reception for only 4.

I have never seen the Zenith remote before but recognize the RCA Victor from movies. Quite different from todays versions, Scott.V
