Millican Dalton (1867-1947)
Addressed as “the Skipper”, he would lead parties in “mountain rapid shooting, rafting, hair’s-breadth escapes”, and climbing.
He also ventured further afield, leading guided mountaineering trips in the Swiss Alps.
Intent on enjoying ever closer companionship with nature, he moved into a disused
splitlevel quarried cave at Castle Crag in Borrowdale in the 1920's.
Living a frugal life amidst the Lakes, he made his own clothes, manufactured
pioneering light-weight camping gear, and continued to lead interested groups on adventurous escapes.
Love the Hair's Breadth Escapes bit!
He also drank black coffee and smoked Woody's - what a guy!
