Once in a Lifetime Experience

Trestle over the Bonnet Carre' Spillway Locks

I had the opportunity to take a 3,500 feet ride (that's half way across) on top of the Spillway structure out to where the oaks are. We rode on a small rail car that rides directly over the very swollen Mississippi River on one side and the rushing water of the opened locks on the other side. The thundering roar of the water, accompanied by the wind, made for a daring ride.
And, yes, I was terribly afraid. Notice the grip on the railing.
I was happy to have gotten a closer look at the mature live oak trees. Hopefully, they will survive this Spillway opening as well as they did in previous years.

What is life if not full of adventure...
From the huge smile on your face I would say you had an enjoyable ride...

Hi Coleen,

Wow, what a nice adventure. And probably no one else more deserving than You to get that ride, since you document so much about the Bonnet Carre' Spillway, its wildlife, its history, and all the nice things about it. We're all jealous! CC

.Is rare for regular citizens to get a ride on the spillway buggy. Is that you have "true grit" or just that the Corps wanted to get you back over to Montz?
northstar3723-Apr-2008 17:03
That's a mighty river!
royalld23-Apr-2008 15:40
Now that is quite an adventure.
I understand the Mississippi River when it is raging can make the ocean look like a bath tub.
Great shot.

lady - you have true spunk and a true grit for adventure that life puts before you. Whomever took this shot of you did a great job. I am proud of you. Who says that retired people cannot have fun. Bob says that his ancestors would be proud to see you enjoying this scene of water floing over what was once their plantation homes.

thanks for sharing the photo with all of us. You are making history

Hi Coleen
I have had the opportunity to photograph from helicopters without doors, snake and scorpion infested desert. I must admit that looks a little more then I'm comfortable with. Atta girl is right!
