Volunteers Help Repair Damages of Katrina

Lafreniere Park in Metairie

These are two of the 120 college students who came this week from all over the United States to volunteer in the hurricane recovery work. We had them working the Bird Sanctuary area at Lafreniere Park today only and they cut over one-hundred tallow, invasive trees and planted cypress and tupelo gum. They also waded in the water and picked up tons of trash. Discarded Christmas trees were brought in and they hauled tens of those tied together to make a levee to build up the soil in the wetlands area of the sanctuary. I have never seen young people work so hard, collectively, in my life. The girls outworked the boys and were in the water up to their behinds lashing the trees together.
However, these two young women not only worked very hard but their personalities just stood out from all the rest. Karen and Neal, I think they are from Connecticut and Minnesota.
Thank you so much.

I knew they were coming but had no idea that they would work this hard. What a blessing from all those who worked today. Such admiration they do dererve. I wish I could have been there to see this, and help too! Looks like you make some good friends Coleen.

That's a great great tribute Coleen!
And I have a daughter in LA right now-Fort Polk to be exact, working her butt off too, on other matters :(
