San Francisco Plantation House

Great River Road in Lions, Louisiana

Built in the grand and ornate style of the passenger steamboats of the Mississippi River, this was once the manor house for a huge sugar cane plantation. It is now opened to tourists.
Built in 1856.

Yes, Robin, it was built by slaves and free men of color. The owners of San Francisco treated their slaves very well and the houses for them were sturdy, secure houses. There was even a school on the place to teach the children of the workers. This house was built in 1856 and slavery was abolished only a decade later. However, the people and their descendants continued to live and work at San Francisco until it ceased to be a working plantation in the mid 1900's.
