Winding Down 2011

With only 20 bays still opened in the Spillway structure, the land is reclaiming itself. The road that winds through the Spillway connecting Montz and Norco is covered with about a foot of sand. Areas that were once pits are now filled with sand left by the rushing river, alluvial soil from all the parts of the United States that drain into the Mississippi.
In the weeks ahead, the crews who work the Spillway will have much to do--studying the fish that came in and are trapped in the borrow pits as they look for the rare sturgeon; cleaning the recreation areas where the Model Airplane Club meets to fly their planes; cleaning the bicycle paths and rebuilding the bridges over the canals on those paths; rebuilding the boat docks--and, so much more.

Your collection of images and commentary of the NO area should be put together for some kind of museum or exhibit!

Everytime we get a bunch of rain here I think of you. Then I find out last week that our river flows north to the Great Lakes. Still, I'm sorry about your mess down there.

Yeah! Keep us posted over the Summer as to how this looks later if you can.

Kind of a mess but it's nice to see land again.

Well I would say that things went as planned, the spillway did what it was intended to do. A big clean up job but I'm sure that people won't mind too much! Thanks for sharing this story with us through your images Coleen!

Well, I guess all the levees held that hadn't broke at first. I guess the clean up here is better than what would have been in New Orleans.
