Female redwing blackbirds

Bonnet Carre' Spillway - Louisiana

This has been a beautiful spring in the Spillway with wildflowers more beautiful than ever. It is nesting season for the redwing blackbirds which come to the Spillway by the hundreds to lay their eggs. Unfortunately, their nests are on the ground in the high grass and the rushing water of the River when the Spillway is opened will destroy a whole year of eggs.
There are plans to open the Spillway in 8 days from the date this photo was taken; hardly enough time for eggs to hatch and birds to mature enough to fly.

A very special photo and a very sad commentary. So sorry about their fate......

This is so sad. It makes you wonder if man and nature will ever be able to coexist. Great photo.

I can see why your upset...I wonder if they sense their fate

There seem to always be a lot of them in spite of natural and man-made catastrophes. But still, it's sad to think about.

Man and nature again meet at conflicting crossroads.
This is an awesome shot, Coleen.
