Steamboat Landing

Edgard, Louisiana

In the 1800's and midway through the 1900's, every plantation had a landing where boats would dock to unload or load produce and goods. The steamboat was the standard way of hauling from one city to the next along the Great River Road.
This building probably served as the general store, post office and pharmacy and sits just across the road from the Mississippi River.

Any idea on what the future holds for these buildings? I see the one next door looks boarded up as well.

I'm betting there are a million stories in this old place.

Love to see and read about Coleen - so glad it hasn't been pushed over and replaced with an ordinary modern construction!

It has been well maintained.

I grew up along the Ohio River too, only in Pittsburgh. Every small town and village had a landing for the steamboat. I bet my kin sent some goods to your kin in LA and you all sent some goods our way too. I love the big bold sign, easy to see from far away. It looks like this structure is in pretty good shape! Great porch! What a great find.

I'd love to hear some of the stories that might come out of a place like this. I grew up on the banks of the Ohio River. I'm from the Ashland, KY area but before it was Ashland it was Poag's Landing . . . for this same reason. I continue to enjoy your rich history and stories.
